Sügisjazz 2018 and Jazz Estonia present:

“LEMBIT SAARSALU 70: SAKSOFONIDE PIDU”

On Sunday, 23 September 2018, at 5 p.m. in Kumu auditorium. The hero of saxophone party
is Lembit Saarsalu, different generations of Estonian saxophonist stars – Raivo Tafenau, Raul
Sööt, Aleksander Paal and Lauri Kadalipp – have come together to celebrate his 70th birthday
and enjoy making good music together.

Saxophonist Lembit Saarsalu debuted in 1965 in an international jazz festival held in Tallinn,
he was repeatedly given the title of the greatest tenor saxophonist of the Soviet Union. The
longest collaboration ties him with the Kursk pianist Leonid Vintskevich in the Jazz for Two
duet, featured in various parts of the world since 1984. Saarsalu has performed on
international stages for over 40 years and has received recognizing titles as “The King of
Saxophone”, “Estonian Jazz Business Card” and “Jazz Gem”. He has participated in
prestigious festivals such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival (USA), the North Sea Jazz
Festival (Holland), and given concerts in Europe, America, Asia, and Africa. The saxophonist
has collaborated with major jazz artists such as Lionel Hampton, Elvin Jones, Dr. Lonnie
Smith and others. The saxophonist has also performed together with symphony orchestras.
Lembit Saarsalu master classes are expected at universities in the USA, Germany, Finland,
and Russia.

For the past 10 years, Saarsalu has worked in Eino Eller Tartu Music College in the
department of rhythmic music. Lembit Saarsalu's latest recordings – “Sunday" (2017) – is a
saxophonist’s tribute to a long-time friend Olev Subbi whose eight paintings are the basis for
the compositions.

Donna Prisbrey, professor at Utah University, has strikingly characterised the saxophonist’s
play: “A delicate sense of rhythm, dynamic diversity and enjoyable tone make Saarsalu a
great master. He can express himself beautifully and mildly and then again with a crispy
brightness. He's a real jazz musician who knows the possibilities and tricks of his instrument.”
Holger Marjamaa, Heikko Remmel, and Ahto Abner will be performing alongside with other
great saxophonists at the saxophone party.

The band:
Lembit Saarsalu – tenor saxophone
Lauri Kadalipp – baritone saxophone, tenor saxophone
Aleksander Paal – alto saxophone
Raul Sööt – tenor saxophone
